We all know that getting a massage is AMAZING! We feel great, we’re relaxed, we feel loose, less stressed, etc. But what about other benefits of getting a massage?
According to the Mayo Clinic, one of America’s most respected health care facilities, discusses massage at length on its www.mayoclinic.com website. In its review of benefits, the article reports massage can provide help with:
- Stress relief
- Anxiety and depression management
- Blood pressure control
- Infant growth
- Sports-related injuries
- Boosting immunity
- Cancer treatment
Not many know that massage is one of the oldest of health practices; dating and found as far back as ancient Chinese medical texts written some 4,000 years ago. Hippocrates advocated massage in the 4th century BC, as have doctors since. However, it wasn’t until the 1930s and ’40s, when the practice of massage, from a medical standpoint, was virtually abandoned as the practice of medicine became more high-tech.
Now, it wasn’t until the 1970s when massage went through a very slight resurgence, but not until recent years as healthcare practitioners become more attune to ancient healing practices partly due to study after study after study that reaffirms much of the benefits of massage that the ancient texts have claimed.
Speaking of there many benefits of massage, here’s a few more that we dug up:
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Childhood Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Migraine headaches
- Labor pains
- It reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol
- It increases levels of serotonin and dopamine
- It slows one’s heart rate and lowers blood pressure
- It increases delta waves in the brain, which are associated with sleep and relaxation
- It increases blood flow to muscles
So in short, as you can see, there is more to massage therapy – and getting a regular massage by a certified/licensed massage therapist than just having an amazing massage to relieve some stress and feel good.
